The cultural association ‘Systasis – Centro studi per la prevenzione e la gestione dei conflitti ambientali’ (Systasis – Research Centre for the prevention and management of environmental conflicts) is a non-profit association, based in Milan.

Active since 2016, it deals with environmental and climate conflicts, new rights and emerging conflicts, promoting strategies and alternative tools for conflict prevention and management.

The Association relies on the commitment of its members, as well as on a team of professionals with different skills and experience, who support the members in their projects and initiatives, in order to always guarantee a multidisciplinary and holistic approach to environmental, climate, public health and social justice issues.

Within its mandate, Systasis:

=

plans and develops research to safeguard human rights related to the environment and climate, natural heritage and the promotion of environmental responsibility, including working in the field through sociological methods and in collaboration with actors on the ground, starting with affected communities;

=

promotes the implementation of newly introduced rights, such as the right to a healthy and clean environment and the rights of participation in environmental matters in light of the Aarhus Convention, through awareness-raising strategies targeting different audiences and through training and dissemination. In doing so, Systasis works closely with experts, scientists, local communities and other members of civil society;

=

provides consultancy and planning services in the field of legal, social, and hard sciences through the implementation of innovative tools and solutions to address environmental issues. In this regard, Systasis is the first research institute to propose the use of mediation techniques for managing environmental disputes.

The association has implemented pioneering projects in collaboration with institutions, universities, practitioners, civil society and other stakeholders. These include the Models and Strategies for Preventing and Managing Environmental Conflicts project, the Climate Routes project on the study of incoming climate migration in Italy, the Gromada project on civic monitoring of environmental harms associated with the Russo-Ukrainian conflict, and numerous training courses on environmental mediation and on the impacts of climate change.
